Process Overview

Product design is often a nonlinear and messy process. This is the framework I’ve developed through my many years of working with cross-functional teams. My teams and I created and used this framework to establish a common baseline for designing great experiences.

The design process consists of seven key phases—Plan, Discover, Define, Ideate, Refine, Build, and Learn—and is encompassed by the “Understand” and “Design” stages, guiding the journey from initial planning to product launch and iteration.

This is not just a resource for UX designers; it is a framework for cross-functional teams that provides these benefits:

  • Shared understanding and vocabulary for product design discussions
  • Clear goals and value for all UX-related work
  • Informed decision-making for product planning and delivery estimates
  • Understanding of roles and involvement in UX-related work
